New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Rural Development on Friday signed an MoU with a company to facilitate sustainable transportation to members of women self-help groups by providing electric bicycles.

The agreement was signed with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) for Sustainable Transportation for Rural Entrepreneurs through Electric Bicycles (STRREE) for SHGs under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM), an official statement was issued. here said.

The ministry said the scheme, STREE, aims to empower the rural economy, especially rural women, by providing them access to green mobility through the introduction of electric bicycles.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by CESL Joint Secretary Rural Livelihood Smriti Sharan and CESL Managing Director and CEO Vishal Kapoor in the presence of Rural Development Secretary Shailesh Kumar Singh.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that this green mobility partnership will further support the economic and social empowerment of rural women and accelerate the empowerment of 'lakhpati didis' in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sharan said that this association with EESL will be of great help to the women of the Self Help Group in rural green wheel ventures.

The project aims to create opportunities for livelihood, independence and prosperity among women in self-help groups, elevating their socio-economic position, the ministry said in the statement.

Furthermore, the project aims to keep rural mobility congestion-free, thereby contributing to the decarbonization of the last-mile mobility space, he added.

CESL is a subsidiary of the state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EFSL), a joint venture of public sector companies under the Ministry of Energy. CESL focuses on energy solutions that lie at the confluence of renewable energy, electric mobility and climate change.

DAY-NRLM promotes women-led SHG enterprises with diversified opportunities in the manufacturing and services sector covering agricultural and non-agricultural spheres. Since its launch, DAY-NRLM has helped create the largest platform for social inclusion, access to financial services and economic empowerment of women, the ministry said.
