The minister assured tobacco traders and farmers that all issues of tobacco farmers and industry stakeholders will be addressed, adding that PM Modi is sensitive to the issues of farmers.

He said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very sensitive towards farmers and our government will do everything to protect the interests of farmers. All efforts will be made to waive the penalty on excess tobacco produced by farmers."

During the meeting he also promised that the government will immediately address the issue of staff shortage in the Tobacco Board. He also said that the validity period of registration will be increased from 1 year to 3 years. It will be available to all tobacco farmers from the next season.

At present, as per the Tobacco Board regulations under the Tobacco Board Act, 1975 as per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, each certificate of registration or renewal of registration shall be valid only for the year for which it was granted.

He urged tobacco farmers to avail the 3 percent interest subvention facility under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund on loans taken by farmers from banks at 9 percent interest rate.

"I urge the farming community to avail the interest subvention facility under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, through which the agriculture department provides 3 per cent interest subsidy," he said.

He also urged the farmers to register themselves online. However, the minister said that offline registration is also available for the benefit of small farmers.
