New Delhi, The government has constituted a panel that will recommend legislative measures to facilitate economically viable recovery of critical minerals found in small quantities.

Critical mineral blocks like lithium are important for the manufacturing of electric vehicles.

The seven-member panel, headed by NITI Aayog member VK Saraswa, will suggest legislative measures to ensure optimal and scientific mining of deep mineral deposits like copper, gold and diamonds, which are formed in the form of veins and canes. According to an official memorandum issued by the Ministry of Mines, mining can generally be done only through underground mining.

According to the memorandum, the committee will also formulate a strategy to popularize the impact of the Minin reforms among the states.

Critical mineral blocks like lithium are important for the manufacturing of electric vehicles. Last year, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) had established estimated resources of 5. million tonnes of lithium in the Salal-Haimana area of Jammu and Kashmir.

The government has canceled the auction of 13 of the 20 blocks put up for sale in the first tranche of critical minerals as the response was disappointing.

Of the 20 blocks on offer, 56 physical bids and 56 online bids were received for 18 blocks. Of the 11 canceled blocks, seven mines have been notified for auction under the third round. The second round of auction of six blocks has been completed as per schedule.
