New Delhi: The government on Thursday said it will take appropriate policy interventions to ensure stability in wheat prices for consumers in the country.

After the meeting of the Committee of Ministers chaired by Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, the government said that it has directed officials to keep a close watch on wheat prices.

According to official data, the prices of wheat and flour have increased by Rs 2 per kg from a year ago.

As of June 20, the average retail price of wheat stood at Rs 30.99 per kg, up from Rs 28.95 a year ago, while the price of wheat flour rose to Rs 36.13 per kg from Rs 34.29 per kg last year, the data showed. Went.

During the meeting the ministers discussed in detail the wheat stock position and prices.

"The Union Minister directed that wheat prices be closely monitored and appropriate policy interventions be taken to ensure price stability for the country's consumers," the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs said in a statement.

It assured that the government has purchased slightly more wheat for the central pool compared to last year.

"After meeting the requirement of PDS and other welfare schemes, which is about 18.4 million tonnes, adequate stocks of wheat are available for market intervention if required," the ministry statement said.

As of June 18, the government had procured 26.6 million tonnes of wheat for the central pool in the 2024-25 rabi marketing year that began April 1, slightly higher than 26.2 million tonnes last year.
