New Delhi [India], June 12: Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), highlighted the significant impact of the government initiative on the toy industry in India.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Singh reported a 50 per cent decline in toy imports over the last decade, thanks to the National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT), higher import duties and mandatory quality controls designed to prevent attributed to measures like orders. An influx of inferior toys.

"Today's interaction between major retail players like Flipkart and various members of the Toy Association and toy manufacturing enterprises is aimed at promoting sourcing of toys from India for large companies for both the Indian and international markets," Singh said.

He further added, “And you would be aware that various initiatives of the Government including the National Toy Action Plan, coupled with mandatory quality control orders have led to high import duties, toy industry and dumping of substandard toys in India.“The last two years have seen significant growth.”

“Exports have increased by over 200 per cent and imports have declined by almost 50 per cent. This initiative is part of the ongoing initiative today to ensure that more products from our toy industry are exported to the national market through major channels. And get access to international markets like Flipkart and Amazon,” he said.

Singh also mentioned the workshop organized by DPIIT on Wednesday, which was attended by major retail players like Flipkart and Amazon, members of toy associations and enterprises involved in toy manufacturing.The focus of the workshop was to promote sourcing of toys from India for both domestic and international markets.

He emphasized that this workshop is part of the ongoing initiative to increase the reach of Indian toy products in the national and international markets through these major retail platforms.

Sanjeev Singh, Joint Secretary, DPIIT, elaborated on the success of these initiatives given the remarkable growth in the Indian toy industry.

Toy exports increased by 239 percent in FY 2022-23 compared to FY 2014-15 and there has been a significant improvement in the quality of toys available in the domestic market.

He mentioned that DPIIT conducted a workshop with Flipkart and the Indian toy industry to promote growth, market access and development of modern marketing skills.Around 100 people including companies from Flipkart, Walmart and Toy Association of India participated in the workshop.

The objective of the workshop is to enhance India's position and capabilities in the global toy supply chain, help manufacturers understand the intricacies of online selling to boost sales and market access.

According to DPIIT, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has granted more than 1,400 licenses to domestic manufacturers and more than 30 licenses to foreign manufacturers to make toys that meet BIS standards.

Additionally, a cluster-based approach has been adopted to support the domestic toy industry.

The MSME Ministry is supporting 19 toy clusters under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI), and the Textiles Ministry is providing design and tooling support to 26 toy clusters.Several promotional initiatives such as the Indian Toy Fair 2021 and Toycathon have also been taken to promote indigenous toys and encourage innovation.

Through these efforts, DPIIT aims to connect the industry with online marketplaces, thereby creating growth opportunities.
