New Delhi, In a move aimed at enhancing consumer safety and product quality, the government has made it mandatory for stainless steel and aluminum kitchen utensils to conform to national quality standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) said on Friday. .

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a quality control order on March 14, making ISI mark mandatory for these kitchen utensils.

The Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mark is developed by BIS, which ensures the quality and safety of the product.

According to BIS, the order bans the manufacture, import, sale, distribution, storage or exhibition for sale of any stainless steel or aluminum utensils which do not bear the BIS standard mark.

A statement said penalties will be imposed for non-compliance with the order, underscoring the government's commitment to consumer safety and product integrity.

This development follows the recently formulated comprehensive standards for kitchen utensils by BIS, including IS 14756:2022 for stainless steel and IS 1660:2024 for aluminum utensils.

Standards cover material requirements, design specifications and performance parameters.

The government said the move will boost consumer confidence and motivate manufacturers to adopt best practices.
