New Delhi: The government has issued mandatory quality norms for asbestos or fiber cement based products to curb import of substandard goods and promote domestic manufacturing.

In this regard, a notification 'Asbestos or Fiber Cement Based Products (Quality Control) Order 2024' was issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on March 6 this year.

Under these orders, goods cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark.

"This will come into force on the expiry of six months from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette," the DPII notification said.

In order to protect domestic small/micro industries and ensure smooth implementation of QCO and ease of doing business, relaxation has been given to small/micro industries with respect to timeliness. Small industries have been given an additional nine months and micro industries have been given an additional 12 months to meet the criteria.

Violation of the provision of the BIS Act is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of not less than Rs 2 lakh for the first offence.

Various initiatives including development of QCO are being taken by the Department to develop quality sensitization among users and manufacturers.

Mandatory QCOs help curb imports of substandard products, prevent unfair trade practices, and ensure the safety and welfare of consumers as well as the environment.

Earlier, such orders have been issued for several items including smart meter welding rods and electrodes, cookware and utensils, fire extinguishers, electric ceiling fans and domestic gas stoves.
