New Delhi: The government has directed telecom operators to block all incoming international fake calls impersonating Indian mobile numbers. This information was given in an official statement on Sunday.

The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) said that it has been reported that fraudsters are making international fake calls to Indian citizens by showing them Indian mobile numbers and are committing cyber crime and financial fraud.

Such calls appear to be originating from within India but are being made by cyber criminals from abroad by manipulating the Calling Line Identity (CLI) and are being used for fake digital arrests, FedEx scams, drugs or narcotics in courier, It has been misused in recent cases such as impersonation. Disconnection of mobile numbers by DoT or TRAI officials, by government and police officials etc.The statement said, "DOT and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have put in place a system to prevent such international fake calls from reaching any Indian telecom customer. Now the TSPs have been empowered to stop such incoming international fake calls. Instructions have been issued for this."

International fake calls originating from Indian landline numbers have already been blocked by TSPs as per the instructions issued by the Department of Telecommunications.

Last week, DoT had issued a direction to telecom operators to immediately re-verify 6.8 lakh mobile numbers within 60 days, which are suspected to be obtained using illegal, non-existent or fake documents.

The department has flagged around 6.80 lakh mobile connections as potentially fraudulent after advanced AI-powered analysis.
