It said that the TSP in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has designed a system to help identify incoming international spoofed calls and prevent them from reaching any Indian telecom customer.

In a statement, the Ministry of Communications pointed out that "fraudsters are making international fake calls to Indian citizens by pretending to be Indian mobile numbers and committing cyber crimes and financial frauds".

“It appears that these calls are originating from within India, but are being made by cyber criminals from abroad by manipulating the calling line identity (CLI),” I said.

The ministry said these calls have been misused in recent cases of "fake digital arrests, FedEx scams, drugs/narcotics in couriers, impersonation as government and police officials, disconnection of mobile numbers by DoT/TRAI officials, etc." ".

DoT had earlier asked TSPs to block international spoof calls coming to Indian landline numbers.

"Instructions have now been issued to TSPs to block such incoming international fake calls," the ministry said.

To maintain the security of users, DoT has taken several initiatives including the citizen-centric Sanchar Saathi portal to protect telecom users.

The Minister said, “Despite best efforts, there may still be some fraudsters who become successful through other means. For such calls, you can help everyone by reporting such suspected fraudulent communications on the Chaksh feature on Sanchar Saathi. Can."
