Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal said the economically weak and young single mothers from Uganda were brought to India on the pretext of getting them jobs in restaurants and cafes in Goa.

"Once brought to India, traffickers confiscate the girls' passports and...use violence to push them into prostitution and impose loans worth lakhs of rupees on them," police said.

He further said, “This racket, a close-knit group linked to smuggler Jojo Nakintu, operates largely online, leveraging escort websites to lure customers as well as offline on the beaches and streets in Arambol Works. it happens."

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi, the sex trafficking racket was busted with the help of NGO Arz.

“One of the victims contacted the Embassy and through the Embassy's assistance and support, Goa Police was able to reach the location of the victims. Mandrem police inspector and members of Arz NGO set out in search and managed to rescue two victims and arrest a smuggler,” Dalvi said.

The rescued women have been kept in a protective home in Mersis, North Goa.

Police are investigating the matter further.
