AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Congress leader Mumtaz Patel urged the state BJP government to compensate farmers affected by heavy rains and floods in Bharuch district last month.

Patel wrote two letters to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Bharuch Collector Tushar Sumera on September 12 and shared them on social media platform X on Wednesday.

Many low-lying areas of Bharuch were inundated after the Narmada river crossed the danger level of 24 feet at the Golden Bridge in the last week of August.

A few days later, 10 villages in Jambusar and Amod talukas were submerged due to flooding in the Dhadhar river.

“I am writing to bring to your attention the significant losses suffered by farmers in many parts of Bharuch district due to the recent adverse weather conditions, which have severely affected the Kharif crop season. The weather events have caused significant damage to crops and household goods, creating a dire situation for many farmer families,” said Patel, who is the daughter of veteran Congress leader late Ahmed Patel.

"The damage includes, but is not limited to, crop damage. Extensive destruction of Kharif crops has been reported, leaving farmers without their primary source of livelihood," he said in the letter. He said farmers also suffered damage to their houses and essential household items.

He said the Gujarat government should compensate the affected farmers to help them recover and rebuild their lives.

In a separate letter to Sumera, he said farmers affected by rains and floods should be immediately compensated.
