New Delhi, Bihar Senior BJP MP Giriraj Singh, who retained the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat, on Tuesday took charge as Union Textiles Minister in the new Modi government.

Singh replaces Union minister Piyush Goyal, who retained the commerce and industry ministry after winning the North Mumbai Lok Sabha seat.

As textile minister, Singh faces the challenge of facilitating the revival of exports from the sector, which declined by 3.24 per cent to USD 34.4 billion in 2023-24 compared to USD 35.5 billion in FY2023. recorded billion US dollars.

In 2021-22, outward shipments of textiles and apparel were recorded at over US$41 billion.

“The textile sector of the country has the highest potential for employment generation.It also has a major share in global exports. In the coming days, we will perform in accordance with the aspirations of the country under the guidance of the Prime Minister because this sector is also linked to the farmers. "...I am confident that the textile sector will play an important role in employment generation in the present and future also," The minister said while talking to reporters after assuming charge.

Singh retained Bihar's Begusarai Lok Sabha seat by a narrow margin of 81,480 votes. He left his current seat of Nawada and moved to Begusarai in 2019 and defeated former JNU students' union leader and CPI candidate Kanhaiya Kumar by a huge margin of over 4 lakh votes.In this election, the Left fielded former MLA Abdhesh Kumar Roy, who secured 5.67 lakh votes against the BJP's incumbent's 6.49 lakh votes.

As a member of the previous Lok Sabha, he became Cabinet Minister of the newly formed Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries. He was later transferred to the Ministry of Rural Development. Now he has been made the Textiles Minister.

The textile industry employs approximately 45 million workers, including 3.5 million handloom workers.

India is the world's second largest textile and apparel producer.It is also the sixth largest exporter of textiles, including apparel, household and technical products.

The country's share in global trade in textiles and apparel is 4 percent. The textile and apparel industry contributes 2.3 percent to the country's GDP, 13 percent to industrial production and 12 percent to exports.
