Indore: Geeta, a hearing and speech impaired woman who returned to India from Pakistan in 2015, is all set to appear for the Class 8 examination to be conducted by the Madhya Pradesh State Open School Education Board, an official said .

A board official said on Thursday that 33-year-old Geeta's application has been approved, allowing her to apply for the examination starting next week.

"Approving Geeta's application, we have allowed her to appear for the class examination and she will soon get her admit card," said Prabhat Raj Tiwari, director of the state OP School Education Board.

Officials said the Class 8 exams conducted by the State Board of Open Schooling will begin on May 21 and end on May 28.

Anand Service Society, an Indore-based NGO, is helping Geeta appear for the Class VIII exams, said its secretary Gyanendra Purohit.He told that Geeta's real name is Radha and she currently lives with her mother Meena Pandhare in Chhatrapat Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra.

After returning to India from Pakistan, Geeta lived in Indore for about five years. Purohi said she passed Class 5 exams in 2020, but could not pursue further studies due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons.

Referring to the video call conversation with Geeta, she said in gestures that she wants to become financially independent after studying.

"If Geeta clears the Class 8 exam, she can become eligible for government recruitment for Class IV employees under the quota for persons with disabilities," he said.

Purohit said, Geeta Chhatrapat is preparing for her Class 8 exams with the help of Progressive Life Centre, an NGO based in Sambhajinagar.Purohit's wife and sign language expert Monica Purohit is also preparing songs for the exam through online classes.

"Geeta is diligently preparing for her Class VIII exams. Although she is facing some difficulties in Hindi and Sanskrit, I am sure she will overcome these difficulties through her perseverance." Monica Purohit said.

According to officials, Geeta's age is estimated to be 33 years. She had gone to Pakistan about 23 years ago after accidentally boarding a train in her childhood.Pakistan Rangers found her sitting alone in Samjhauta Express at Lahore Railway Station.

The deaf and mute girl was adopted by Bilkis Edhi of a social organization called Edhi Foundation of Pakistan and kept with her in Karachi.

Due to the special efforts of the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Geeta could return to India on 26 October 2015. The next day, he was sent to the residential complex of an NGO in Indore. Geeta has been living in Maharashtra since she shifted to the state to be near her family in 2021.
