New York: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli should open with skipper Rohit Sharma in India's T20 World Cup match against Ireland on Wednesday as Yashasvi Jaiswal slipped to number three.

There is a lot of debate going on about Kohli's batting position in the T20 World Cup.

Kohli has long been India's designated number three batsman in the white-ball format. He joins the premier event after an excellent IPL season.

"Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal at number three," Gavaskar told 'Star Sports' while giving his preferred line-up for the game here.

Opening for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli scored 741 runs in 15 matches at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of over 154. He scored one century and five half-centuries during his brilliant performance.

Gavaskar chose paceman Rishabh Pant ahead of Sanju Samson for wicketkeeping duties and Mohammed Siraj ahead of left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh.

"Suryakumar Yadav at number four, Rishabh Pant at number five. At number six, I would have Hardik Pandya, at number seven would be Ravindra Jadeja, at number eight, not necessarily in that batting order, Shivam Dube. Kuldeep at number nine Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah will be at number 10." And No. 11 will be Siraj," he said.

After the match against Ireland, India will face arch-rivals Pakistan here on Sunday.
