New Delhi, G Kishan Reddy has been appointed as the new Coal and Mines Minister in the newly formed Modi 3.0 government.

Reddy will replace Pralhad Joshi, who has been appointed minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution and new and renewable energy in the new government.

Reddy's biggest challenge will be to ensure adequate supply of coal to power generation plants, which are working overtime to meet the peak power demand.

Another area they will need to focus on is increasing private sector participation, expanding coal gasification and coal bed methane production.

In the mining sector, the lukewarm response from bidders in the first round of critical minerals auctions underlines the need for a pragmatic policy approach.

The government had earlier canceled the auction of 13 of the 20 blocks put up for sale in the first tranche of critical minerals because the response was slow.

Reddy defeated his nearest Congress rival Danam Nagendra in the recent Lok Sabha elections, retaining the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of over 49,000 votes.

Born to middle-class farmer-parents in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana near Hyderabad, he started his political career as an ordinary worker in 1977. He has held important party positions including President of the state unit of BJP and National President of BJP Youth. Front (BJYM).

As a Union Minister, the leader has held the portfolios of Home, Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region.

He is also a three-time MLA.

Satish Chandra Dubey, considered a prominent Brahmin leader of BJP in Bihar, has been made Minister of State in the Ministry of Coal and Mines in the new government.
