New Delhi, Food regulator FSSAI has asked food business operators to immediately remove claims of 100 per cent fruit juice from advertisements as well as labels on packaged products.

According to an official statement, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive to all food business operators (FBOs) to avoid any mention of '100% fruit juice' from the labels and advertisements of reconstituted fruit juices. Remove the claim. Immediate effect.

All FBOs have also been directed to phase out all existing pre-printed packaging materials before September 1, 2024. “It has come to the notice of FSSAI that many FBOs are wrongly marketing various types of reconstituted fruit juices by claiming to be 100 per cent fruit juice,” the statement said. After thorough investigation, FSSAI has concluded that, as per the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, there is no provision for making '100%' claim.

"Such claims are misleading, particularly in situations where the main ingredient of the fruit juice is water and the primary ingredient for which the claim is made is present only in limited concentrations, or when the fruit juice is mixed with water and fruit concentrate. Is reconstituted using or pulp,” FSSAI said.

FBOs have been asked to comply with the standards of fruit juices specified under sub-regulation 2.3.6 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.

"This regulation states that products covered under this standard must be labeled in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations, 2020," the statement said.

In particular, in the ingredient list, the word "reconstituted" must be mentioned before the name of the juice that has been reconstituted from concentrate."Additionally, if the added nutritive sweeteners exceed 15 g/kg, the product must be labeled as 'sweetened juice'," the regulator said.

FSSAI said it is dedicated to protecting and promoting public health through regulation and supervision of food safety standards across the country.
