De Minaur, seeded 11th, defeated Australian Open finalist Medvedev 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in a hard-fought match at Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The Australian star was resolute in defense and clinical in dispatching any short ball sent by his higher-ranked opponent in a two-hour, 49-minute victory that took the pair's ATP head-to-head series 3- Improved to 6.

This upset victory also helped de Minaur become the first male Australian player to reach the singles quarterfinals at Roland Garros since former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

The match, which started on a bright note with Medvedev breaking de Minaur in the third game of the match, ended with the former world No. 1 gifting the Australian victory with a double fault. Medvedev was trying to reach the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive time and won the first set on the strength of an early break. But the match turned in the middle of the second set.

De Minaur scored his first break of the match to make it 3–2 before Medvedev called a medical time-out on the changeover and received treatment for a blister on his right foot. Although the issue did not hinder her movement, her level dropped and De Minaur took control of the match by racing to the second and then the third set.

Medvedev immediately grabbed an early break to level the fourth set at 1–1 and it looked as if the match would reach an intriguing climax, but De Minaur soon followed with another charge on the return. According to Infosys Stats, they have won four consecutive games 2-3, converting seven of the 14 break points they earned. Now in his second Grand Slam quarterfinal after reaching the same stage at the 2020 US Open, de Minaur will next face fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev or 13th-seeded Holger Rune. The 25-year-old is now 29-10 on the season, which includes winning his eighth ATP Tour title in Acapulco.
