Pathanamthitta (Kerala), Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said the freezing of CPI(M)'s bank account in Thrissur by central agencies will not affect the party's election-related work.

He alleged that the action of the central agencies was a ploy to help the BJP candidate win from Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency.

Addressing the media in Adoor here as part of the campaign ahead of the general elections, Vijayan said central agencies may assume that the CPI(M) works through bank accounts alone.

Vijaya said, "Although it is true that we have funds in our account, freezing it will not affect our election work. The general public donates money for the party's work.e cannot stop the actions of a party functioning in this manner," he said while reacting to a question on the Income Tax Department's recent decision to freeze a bank account in the name of the Thrissur District Committee of CPI(M).

He said that central agencies including the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department feel that they can disrupt the functioning of the party to help BJP candidate and actor-politician Suresh Gopi win the Thrissur seat.

“They believe that freezing bank accounts will stop our functioning, however, they are wrong. Suresh Gopi will finish only third in the election and Sunil Kumar will win with a thumping majority.Such tactics will not help BJP or their agencies win the Thrissur seat,” Vijayan said.

While the BJP has fielded actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi from Thrissur in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, senior CPI leader VS Sunil Kumar and Congress's Muraleedharan are his main rivals.

The CPI(M) had earlier said that the action by central agencies against the opposition parties was part of the fascist agenda being implemented by the BJP-led Union government.

CPI(M) is a party that submits its income and expenditure details to the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission every year, the bank account details of the Thrissur District Committee were also submitted, I said.

Lok Sabha elections in Kerala will be held in a single phase on April 26 and the results will be declared on June 4.
