“Opposition voices are being suppressed in West Bengal. The freedom of expression of common people is in danger. In West Bengal, I even threatened a person for sharing cartoons,” the Prime Minister said while addressing a rally in Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency in Hooghly district in support of party candidate Arup Kanti Digar.

The Prime Minister was referring to Dr Ambikesh Mahapatra, a former Jadavpur University professor, who was arrested by the police in 2011 for sharing a cartoon of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Prime Minister said that Trinamool Congress leaders feel that they have a monopoly on the culture of West Bengal. “But this is the land of Maa Durga and Maa Kali. Censorship has been imposed on people's faith in Bengal. Taking the name of Lord Ram is a crime here,” the Prime Minister said.

He said that it is unfortunate that the condition of women and education in the land of Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is continuously deteriorating.

“The contribution of personalities like Syama Prasad Mukherjee is being minimized in West Bengal due to appeasement politics and keeping the dedicated minority vote bank happy. The Prime Minister said, "Trinamool Congress leaders are continuously insulting people coming from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes."

He also said that Trinamool Congress will not be able to stop the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

This was the third rally addressed by the Prime Minister during the day, the first two being in Barrackpore and Hooghly.

Later he is scheduled to attend his fourth rally in Howrah.
