Guwahati: Four more wild animals died in the worst floods in recent years in Assam's famous Kaziranga National Park (KNP), taking the death toll due to drowning and treatment to 163, an official said on Wednesday. Said.

The animal death toll has risen from 159 till Tuesday in the devastating second wave of floods that has affected the entire state.

The dead animals included nine rhinoceros, 146 hog deer, two sambar, one rhesus macaque and one otter.

A total of 22 animals have died during treatment. They are 17 hog deer, three swamp deer, one rhesus macaque and one beaver pup.

Forest personnel rescued 122 hog deer, three swamp deer, two cubs each of rhinoceros, sambar, elephant and scops owl and one each of Indian rabbit, rhesus macaque, otter and a wild cat.

Currently, seven animals are under medical care while 116 others have been released after treatment, the official said.

KNP is facing its worst floods in recent years, having previously suffered a large-scale devastation in 2017 when more than 350 wildlife died in flood waters and in vehicle collisions while migrating into the highlands through cattle corridors. Were.

The official said that out of a total of 233 camps in the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 51 were still under water as of Tuesday evening, compared to 62 camps the previous day.
