Experts point out that flooding is essential for the conservation and rejuvenation of the park's ecosystem as the overflowing waters of the Brahmaputra river not only revive the grasslands but also flush out aquatic weeds and unwanted plants.

The additional water flow also adds mineral-rich alluvial soil needed for the growth of grasses and shrubs needed for the herbivores' food.

Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage Site, is famous for the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The landscape of Kaziranga is of vast forests, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, swamps and shallow ponds. It was declared a national park in 1974.
