Patil, who joined the BJP in 2014 after breaking ties with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, had sought nomination from the party during the Lok Sabha elections from Hingoli constituency in Marathwada, but failed to get the ticket. He had expressed his displeasure on social media after not getting the nomination.

During seat sharing, Hingoli seat was left for Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena. During the general elections, BJP had given him the responsibility of election chief of Hadgaon Himayatnagar assembly constituency. Shiv Sena had lost the Hingoli seat to the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction.
