Shimla: BJP's sitting MP Suresh Kashyap defeated Congress's Vinod Sultanpuri by 91,451 votes on Tuesday in Shimla parliamentary seat.

Kashyap got 5,19,748 votes, while Vinod Sultanpuri, MLA from Kasauli Assembly seat and son of six-time Shimla MP KD Sultanpuri, managed to get 4,28,297 votes.

The former state BJP chief said that the results seem to be in line with the exit poll predictions and people have decided to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister for the third consecutive time.

In the 2022 elections in Himachal Pradesh, Congress won 13 assembly constituencies under Shimla parliamentary constituency, while BJP could win only three.

However, in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress could not gain a lead in most of the assembly constituencies, even though the party had given a large share to the state cabinet as well as three chief parliamentary secretaries and the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly from these constituencies. ,

Besides, the Samyukta Kisan Manch (SKM) had extended its support to the Congress, claiming the support of 27 apple, stone fruit and vegetable growers associations.

Increase in import duty on apples, poor condition of roads, frequent landslides, hydropower projects, illegal mining, manufacturing of substandard drugs and lack of adequately developed industrial infrastructure were the major issues in this constituency.

However, Kashyap's election campaign relied heavily on the charisma of PM Narendra Modi as well as development projects in the region, including approval of projects worth Rs 27,000 crore.

Shimla parliamentary constituency, which came into existence after the merger of the hilly areas of Punjab in 1967, has been reserved for the Scheduled Castes since its inception and of the 14 Lok Sabha elections held since then, the Congress has won it nine times, the BJP three times. And Janata Party has won. Party and Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) once each.
