New Delhi, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Sri Lanka on Thursday in his first bilateral foreign trip in his second consecutive term.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit reaffirms India's 'Neighbourhood First policy' and underlines New Delhi's continued commitment to Sri Lanka as its "closest" maritime neighbor and time-tested friend.

The External Affairs Ministry said Jaishankar's visit will give impetus to mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in connectivity projects and other areas.

Jaishankar was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's delegation to the G7 outreach summit in Italy's Apulia region last week.

Jaishankar's visit to Sri Lanka will be his standalone bilateral visit after taking charge as External Affairs Minister for the second term on June 11.

The Foreign Ministry said the Foreign Minister will hold meetings with the Sri Lankan leadership on a wide range of issues.

"This will be the first bilateral visit by the External Affairs Minister after the formation of the new government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," it said.

"Reaffirming India's Neighbor First policy, the visit underlines India's continued commitment to Sri Lanka as its nearest maritime neighbor and time-tested friend," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

"The visit will give impetus to connectivity projects and mutually beneficial cooperation in all sectors," it said.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe was among seven top leaders from India's neighborhood and the Indian Ocean region who attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi and the Union Council of Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 9.
