Thane: The civic body in Maharashtra's Thane city on Thursday launched a drive to remove illegal bars and pubs, a day after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issued an order to this effect in the wake of an incident of alleged drug consumption at a similar establishment. By afternoon, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had demolished at least five such illegal establishments in different areas of the city, an official said.

On Wednesday, CM Chavan directed the municipal corporations and police commissioners of Thane and neighboring Mira Bhayandar township to demolish and bulldoze all illegal bars and pubs as well as properties involved in drug-related activities in their jurisdictions .

As per his instructions, TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao carried out the demolition drive.

Thane Municipal Corporation spokesperson said that this campaign will continue in the entire city as per the instructions of the Chief Minister.

In view of the action, a large number of police forces have been deployed. Bulldozers and JCB machines are engaged in the operation.

CM has said that drug abuse is having a negative impact on the young generation and there is a need to take strict steps to curb it.

Earlier this week, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started a crackdown on unauthorized structures in pubs and bars in the city. The action was taken following punctuality violations at the Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) bar on Sunday and alleged drug use at the establishment.

Police have arrested eight people, including an event organiser, and suspended four police personnel after L3 Pub was found operating beyond the permissible limits. Additionally, the state excise department has arrested half a dozen waiters of L3 for violating norms related to serving liquor.
