IMPHAL: The Imphal West district administration has requested people living along river banks to remain alert against possible breach of river banks or embankments in view of the rise in river water level due to heavy rains, an official said on Tuesday.

"Major rivers of the district have reached warning level in Imphal area...," said a notification issued by the office of the District Magistrate, Imphal West on Monday night.

"Continuing rainfall is occurring over Imphal and Nambul river catchment areas," it said. The IMD warned of "heavy to very heavy rainfall activity over Manipur for the next five days".

"The public in general and people located close to river banks, river banks or river courses are requested to remain vigilant against any possible violation of river banks," the notification said.

Imphal River is the largest river of Manipur valley.
