The flood situation in Guwahati, Assam, worsened on Thursday, affecting over 1.98 lakh people in nine districts, and one person died due to drowning as the water level of major rivers rose due to incessant rains following Cyclone Remal. Officials said.

One person drowned in Hailakandi district, taking the death toll in the state due to floods and rains since Tuesday to six, while 18 others were injured.

A total of 1,98,856 people were affected in Nagaon, Karimganj Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hojai, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dim Hasao districts, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported.

It said Cachar is the most affected district, where 1,02,246 people are battling flood waters, followed by 36,959 in Karimganj, 22,058 in Hojai and 14,308 in Hailakandi.

A total of 3,238.8 hectares of crop area has also been washed away, while 2,34,53 animals have been affected.The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries, are flowing above the danger mark at several places in the affected districts, the report said.

A total of 35,640 people have taken shelter in 110 relief camps, with the highest number of 19,646 people in Hojai, followed by 12,110 in Cachar, 2,060 in Hailakandi and 1,611 in Karimganj.

Life came to a standstill in Assam's three districts of Barak Valley and Dima Hasao, while intermittent rain and storm were reported from other affected districts on Thursday.

In Karimganj, Cachar and Hailakandi districts of Barak Valley, Barak river and its tributaries Longai, Kushiyara, Singla and Katakhal were flowing above danger level at many places, showing a rising trend, while four embankments in Karimganj were damaged. Went.

In Silchar, which experienced devastating floods in 2022, many areas have been affected by waterlogging and movement of people and traffic has been affected.In the "severely affected" Dima Hasao district, normal life was affected with road connectivity being disrupted across the district due to incessant rains, the official said.

The Haflong-Silchar road has been completely cut off after a portion near Harangajao was washed away, while the Haflong-Harangajao road has been blocked due to several landslides, he said.

The District Disaster Management Authority and Dima Hasao Police have issued an advisory against traveling at night, except on the Umrongso-Lanka route.

Officials said train services that were canceled or temporarily terminated due to landslides on the Haflong-Badarpur rail route have not been restored yet.

In Nagaon, the water level of Barpani river in Kampur was rising and damaged the Sildubi to Amdubi road and a wooden bridge at Ramanipathar.A school was submerged in Pamali Jarani area.

Dhansiri river in Golaghat district is also flowing above the danger level and many low-lying areas have been submerged.

In Sonitpur district, the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are rising and flowing above the danger mark at many places, an official said. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in Guwahati city, affecting traffic.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain and storm in Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Vishwanath, Dibrugarh Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, Dhubri and South Salmara districts till Thursday.Ferry services in the state remained suspended for the third consecutive day while all schools and educational institutions remained closed in the affected districts.

Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has directed the District Commissioners to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected people.

Officials said ASDMA is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with all departments and response agencies to face any situation.
