The flood situation in Assam's Guwahati remains serious with more than 3.5 lakh people affected in 11 districts. Officials gave this information on Saturday.

He said that due to continuous rains after cyclone 'Remal', road and rail communication remained disrupted in many parts of the state.

In the worst-hit Cachar district, all educational institutions were closed on Saturday due to the prevailing weather conditions, an official release said, adding that scheduled semester and compartmental examinations will be conducted as planned.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in a release that around 3.5 lakh people have been affected in Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji, Hojai Cachar, Karimganj, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Hailakandi, Golaghat, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.

Around 30,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps, with various rescue agencies evacuating people from sensitive areas.

Cachar district is the worst affected with 1,19,997 people, followed by Nagaon (78,756), Hojai (77,030) and Karimganj (52,684).

The death toll due to floods, rains and storms in the state since May 28 has reached 12.

Due to continuous rains, rail and road communication has been disrupted in Barak Valley and Dima Hasao. Vehicles are stranded in Meghalaya after a part of the national highway was washed away, cutting off road connectivity to Barak Valley with the rest of the state and the region. According to the spokesperson of Northeast Frontier Railway, many trains have been canceled or short terminated.

Meanwhile, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon has made premature entry into Assam and other northeastern states due to the impact of Cyclone Remal.

There is a possibility of heavy rain and storm in various districts of the state.
