The flood situation in Guwahati, Assam, has further improved and water in major rivers of the state is showing a receding trend, although a population of 54,467 in eight districts is still affected, according to an official report.

It said 25 people have lost their lives so far due to floods, while 34 people have died in storms, rains and landslides since May 28.

The affected districts are Cachar, Kamrup, Hojai, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Nagaon and West Karbi Anglong, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in a bulletin.

Cachar is the worst affected with a population of 32,110, followed by Nagaon with 11,554, Karimganj with 5,285 and Hojai with 2,896.

A population of 6,175 is taking shelter in 44 relief camps in the affected districts.

A total of 3,181 hectares of crop area is still under flood water, the bulletin said.

It said embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged in Cachar, Karimganj, Hojai, Kamrup and West Karbi Anglong.
