In the previous government, Joshi held the departments of Mines, Coal and Parliamentary Affairs.

Joshi, who is close to the central leadership of BJP, is also considered close to the Sangh Parivar.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, he was elected for the fifth consecutive time from Dharwad, Karnataka by defeating Vinod Asuti of Congress by 97,324 votes.

A staunch follower of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Joshi first contested the elections from Dharwad North in 2004 as a BJP candidate. The constituency was later renamed Dharwad following the delimitation process, with Joshi winning the seat in each consecutive election.

Joshi came into limelight during the Idgah grounds controversy in Hubli, which attracted national attention in the early 1990s.

In 1994, six people were killed in police firing in Karnataka, a development that played a major role in the rise of the BJP in Dharwad, North Karnataka and subsequently in the rest of the state.Joshi was at the forefront at that time as the chairman of the National Flag Pride Defense Committee.

He also actively participated in campaigns demanding hoisting of the tricolor at the Eidgah grounds.

Joshi became the Dharwad district chief of BJP in 1995 and remained in the post till 1998.

After serving as a member on various committees, Joshi was appointed as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas in September 2014.

He became the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines in the NDA Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.Joshi, who also has a book titled 'Sadhaneya Sankalp' in Kannada, was a member of the parliamentary delegation to the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in December 2008, where he spoke on atrocities against women and children.
