Thane/Mumbai: Police on Monday arrested five people for killing a 30-year-old man and injuring his friend at a chicken shop located in Mulun area near Thane city, an official said.

He said that on Sunday night, two accused attacked the shop owner with sharp weapons and iron rods over an argument over payment of a bill of Rs 200 for chicken tandoori.

A police station official said that Akshay Narveka and his friend Akash Sable (30) had an argument with chicken shop owner Imran Khan (27) and his brother Salim Khan (29) on Sunday night.

"The heated argument escalated into a fight with the Khan brothers and three others, who allegedly attacked Narvekar and Sable with rods and a chopper. As the two fell unconscious, the accused took them to the hospital where Narvekar succumbed to his injuries. " The officer said.

After the hospital informed the local police about the medico-legal matter, an FIR was registered on murder charges and five people were arrested, he said.

The officer said that Narvekar was working as a peon at the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Those arrested have been identified as Imran Khan (27), his brother Salim Khan (29), Farooq Ghaffar Bagwan (38), Naushad Ali Bagwan (35) and Abdul Ali Bagwan (40).

Another police officer said Narvekar and Sable had gone to a chicken shop owned by the Khan brothers in Thane on Sunday morning, where they had an argument over payment of the bill.

"The matter was resolved then, but in the night when Narvekar and Sable went to Khan's shop located in Mulund area near Thane, a clash broke out again between the two parties," he said.

All the accused were produced in the court, from where they were sent to police custody till 8 May.

The officer said that further investigation is going on.
