Leh: Nominations of two covering candidates and an independent were rejected during scrutiny of papers for Ladakh parliamentary constituency on Saturday, the returning officer said.

Santosh Sukhdev said that due to the rejection only five candidates are left in the fray.

Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency, the country's largest with a total area of ​​173.266 sq km and over 1.82 lakh voters, will go to polls in the fifth phase on May 20.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 6th May.

After investigation, the nomination forms of five candidates were found to be valid, while the candidatures of BJP and Congress covering candidates Stanzin Lakpa and Smanla Dorje Narbu were cancelled.

Sukhadev said that the nomination of independent candidate Ghulam Nabi Zia, whose form was incomplete, was also rejected.

Of the remaining five candidates, BJP's Tashi Gyalson and Congress's Tserin Namgyal are from Leh. The three independents, Mohammad Hanifa Jan, Sajja Hussain and Kacho Mohammad Firoz are all from Kargil.

Thupstan Chhewang won the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat from BJP for the first time in 2014.

He resigned from the party in 2018 and is currently leading the Leh apex body, which, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance, is leading the movement to restore statehood and extend the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to the union territory. Used to be.

The BJP managed to retain the seat in the 2019 general election through Jamyan Tsering Namgyal, who openly rebelled against the party after being denied the ticket this time.

However, he joined the campaign for party candidate Gyalson on Friday, ending weeks of uncertainty in the party camp.

The Congress has won the seat six times since it came into existence in 1967 – the most, with the National Conference winning twice and Independents three times.
