Kohima, rain-related incidents have claimed at least five lives and caused widespread damage in Nagaland in the last few days, according to an official statement on Wednesday.

Damage to houses, roads, bridges and paddy fields has been reported, according to the statement issued by Johnny Ruangmei, joint executive director of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).

Two children from Kejok village in Tuensang district were swept away in Ayong nullah on June 28, he claimed.

The body of one of the children was recovered the same day, while the search for the other was suspended with the consent of his father on the third day without the body being sighted, according to the statement.

On June 29, a youth was swept away by the Dzuvuru stream in Kohima district, but his body could not be recovered.

A young man drowned on Monday in Lake Nsonji in Tseminyu District, where the National Disaster Response Force was called in to assist in search and rescue efforts and the body was recovered the same day.

A man was swept away by strong currents in Nguhaiu, Noklak district, on July 1 and his body was later found.

Several landslides were recorded in the Mokokchung district.

In Kiphire district, continuous rains caused damage to public infrastructure in several areas, leading to the evacuation of several families, the statement said.

Several landslides and road blockages were reported in the Fakim-Tsundang area in Pungro subdivision of the district.

Due to a landslide, the Penkim and Fakim ​​areas have been cut off from the Tsundang, Sangtsong and Vongtsuvong areas. The route to Thanamir has also been completely cut off due to landslides at several places.

Soil erosion was also reported on Tuesday in the Asíangki River near Kiphire district headquarters, causing severe damage to rice fields, the statement said.

In Noklak district, landslides were reported in Punyaongan and Sanglao areas. Due to incessant rains, damage and subsidence have been reported on the roads between Chingmei and Noklak.

In Zunheboto district, several houses were destroyed by landslides in DC Hill West area, while paddy fields were damaged due to flash flooding in Zhavame village in Phek district.

In Shamator district, the Shiponger and Muksuke bridges between Chessore and Y Anner areas were partially destroyed by flash flooding on Tuesday.

A landslide was reported on the Tening-Nsong road in Peren district and debris was being removed.

The NSDMA is still collecting damage reports, according to the statement.

As water levels in many rivers in the state have risen after continuous rains over the past few days, the NSDMA asked people to refrain from fishing or picnicking during the monsoon season.
