Ahmedabad Police arrested five people in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Wednesday, a day after BJP and Congress workers pelted stones at each other outside the opposition party's state headquarters here on Tuesday during a protest against the comments "anti-Hindu" remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivam Verma said two FIRs were registered at Ellisbridge police station in connection with the clash and five people were arrested on Wednesday.

Five policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police (ACP), were injured in the stone-pelting by both sides outside Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the state headquarters of the Congress near Ashram Road in Paldi area of ​​the city.

While one FIR was registered against nearly 450 Congress and BJP workers, another was registered against Congress workers following a complaint lodged by the youth wing of the BJP's Ahmedabad unit, Verma said.

Both FIRs were registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for offences, including unlawful assembly, rioting, endangering life or personal safety of others and causing injury to a public servant on duty.

"Five policemen, including an ACP, were injured in yesterday's incident. We have registered two FIRs, one based on a complaint lodged by a policeman and another by the city's BJP youth wing. Five persons, who could be associated with Any of them were already arrested by us, the CCTV videos revealed that they were involved in the violence," said Verma, DCP (Zone 1) of the city police.

The DCP said the police did not take party affiliation into consideration while making the arrests.

In the first FIR, registered on a complaint filed by injured police constable Karmraj Bhagvatsinh, leader of the Congress opposition in the BJP-ruled Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Shehzad Khan Pathan and two women leaders of the party opposition - Pragati Ahir and Hetaben Parikh - were named in the FIR.

Along with them, the police have named a mob comprising around 250 Congress workers and 200 BJP workers as accused in the FIR.

According to the FIR, it was the Congress workers who first charged at the BJP workers after being incited by some Congress leaders. When the police tried to stop them, the mob started throwing stones and thick wooden sticks towards the other side.

After the attack, BJP workers also pelted stones, the FIR said, adding that the complainant was rushed to hospital after a stone hit his head. Besides him, two other police officers, a national guardsman and an ACP were injured during the clash.

Around 2.30 pm on Tuesday, the BJP's Ahmedabad unit announced that the party's youth wing will hold a demonstration in front of the Congress office in the afternoon against Rahul Gandhi's remarks in Hindi.

Upon hearing about the protest, the city police deployed its personnel to thwart any violence. After the confrontation, the police arrested several people from both sides and brought the situation under control.
