Hyderabad: A large number of dead fish were seen floating in a lake in Sangareddy district and officials attributed the death to low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water body.

A fisheries department official said on Thursday that fish were found dead in the 230-acre lake in Chitkul village on Monday evening and necessary measures were taken to increase the dissolved oxygen percentage in the water body, following which the mortality rate of fish reduced. Is.

The official said, based on preliminary investigation, that dissolved oxygen levels in the lake decreased due to increased "biological load" after sewerage water was released into the lake, resulting in mass deaths.

Officials said about 1.5 tonnes of fish were found dead on the banks of the reservoir.

Local fishermen told the media that fish deaths were being observed since Monday. "We don't know the reasons behind the death of the fish...it is not clear why they died," he said, adding that families of around 100 fishermen depend on the lake.

He appealed to the government to give ex-gratia amount for the loss of fishes.
