India is currently at the top of the World Test Championship points table, while Bangladesh is in the fourth position. The Test in Chennai, which will be played on a red dirt pitch, also marks the start of the Indian men's team's home international season.

In India's last Test, they beat England 4-1 at home, while Bangladesh recorded a remarkable 2-0 series victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

After winning the toss, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said his decision was based on exploiting the early moisture on offer in Chepauk.

“There is humidity and we want to take advantage of it. The tone seems difficult. The first session will be very good for the closers. This is a new series. It is a good mix of experience and youth. “We are going with three seamers and two all-rounders,” he said.

India captain Rohit Sharma said that he would have opted to bowl first, with his bowling combination of Akash, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj as pacers, along with two spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

“I would have done that (bowl first) too. A little soft, the playing field. They will be challenging conditions. We have prepared well, so we must take advantage of our potential and play as we know how.

“If we look at the 10 Test matches, every match is important. But we want to focus on what is in front of us. We came here a week ago, we had a good preparation before this. We feel confident,” Rohit said.

The match also marks wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant's return to Test cricket after almost 20 months. His last test before surviving a life-threatening car accident was coincidentally against Bangladesh in Mirpur in December 2022.
