Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered its first FIR under the Indian Justice Code (BNS), the new criminal law that came into effect on Monday, in Anantnag, Srinagar, Baramulla and Kulgam districts, a police spokesperson said.

"This historic event marks the beginning of a new era in the justice delivery system in the Kashmir region," the spokesperson said.

FIR number 143/2024 was registered on Monday under sections 125 (A) and 281 of the Indian Judicial Code 2023 at Bijbehara police station in Anantnag district. This was the first FIR lodged in the Kashmir region under the new criminal laws.

Similarly, in Srinagar district, FIR number 22/2024 was registered at Chanpora police station under section 303 of the BNS and section 135 (1) of the Electricity Act.

In Baramulla, the police registered FIR number 93/2024 under sections 303(2) and 329(3) of the BNS at Kreri police station.

FIR number 25/2024 was registered under sections 223, 303 (ii) and 326A of the BNS at Panjla police station in Sopore.

The Kulgam police have registered their first case - FIR number 47/2024 under sections 74, 115 (2) of the BNS at Yaripora police station, the spokesperson said.
