JAMMU: Fire and emergency services personnel worked for hours to control the leakage of ammonia gas at a cold storage and ice factory that caused a fire here, officials said on Tuesday.

A fire was reported at the factory in Gole Puli on the outskirts of Jam on Monday evening, but timely and prompt action by the fire and emergency services saved lives and property worth crores, a department official said.

He said the firefighters bravely rescued people and brought the fire under control.

However, it was found that dangerous ammonia gas was leaking and two officers risking their lives tried to close the knob but found that the control valve was damaged, the officer said, adding that some minor injuries were reported. Was.

The official said an alternative mechanism, including the use of a mixture of water with baking soda, was adopted on the instructions of Deputy Director RK Raina, who rushed to the spot with more fire tenders from various FIR stations.

He said that residents of the entire area have been evacuated and the operation is continuing throughout the night. He said teams of police, administration, SDRF and NDRF also visited the spot to coordinate and assist in the operation.

The leak was finally contained on Tuesday morning and the operation was called off around 2 pm, the official said.
