Thane, A fire broke out in a closed chemical factory in Dombivli area of ​​Thane district of Maharashtra on Wednesday morning. The officers provided this information.

There were no casualties and the fire was brought under control within six hours, he said.

The unit is located near Amudan Chemicals, where a massive explosion on May 23 had claimed 10 lives and injured more than 60.

Officials said that the fire broke out in the Indo Amines chemical factory located in Dombivali MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area at around 10 am on Wednesday due to short circuit in the adjacent company.

An explosion also occurred, said Deepak Nikam, head of the disaster management cell of Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC).

Thick smoke emanating from the unit could be seen from a distance, he said, adding that a school in the area was immediately evacuated.

KDMC Commissioner Dr Indu Rani Jakhar later told reporters that people living nearby have been advised to move to safe places until the fire is extinguished.

Nine fire tenders from four different agencies responded to the fire and brought it under control by 3.30 pm, he said.

Following the tragedy at Amudan Chemicals, the Maharashtra government has constituted a committee to prepare an action plan to shift hazardous chemical companies from Dombivali MIDC.

The Commissioner said that a survey of companies is going on in MIDC.
