Mumbai: A fire broke out in a 62-storey residential building in South Mumbai's Byculla area around midnight, officials said on Sunday.

An official said that at 11.42 pm on Saturday night, a fire broke out in a flat on the 10th floor of A wing of Monte South Building in Khatao Mill Compound, Byculla, due to which the entire floor was filled with smoke.

A fire official said no casualties were reported, while 25 to 30 people were rescued through stairs.

He said that the fire was extinguished at 2.45 am.

It was a "Level-2" fire which was confined to electrical wiring and installations, wooden furniture, household items, cupboards, mattresses, wooden beds, sofas, curtains, electronic equipment, false ceilings, doors, windows and modular kitchens. Was. Curtains, window glasses etc. of a flat on the 10th floor and an apartment on the 11th floor, the officer said.

He said that while extinguishing the fire, the compressor of the refrigerator in the kitchen of the 10th floor flat exploded.

The official said eight water tankers and six fire engines were involved in extinguishing the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. There were reports that a flat on the 10th floor of the tower caught fire following a short-circuit.
