Mumbai: The Mumbai civic body is planning to open the CD Barfiwala flyover in Andheri for vehicular traffic from July 1 as it has completed the parallel alignment with the Gokhale Bridge.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had faced criticism over the alignment mismatch, which came to light earlier this year when the northern branch of the Gokhale Brigade was opened for motorists.

BMC on Wednesday said it has successfully completed on Monday the extremely challenging task of lifting the Barfiwala flyover and aligning it parallel to the Gopalkrishna Gokhale bridge using hydraulic jacks.

"The meticulous planning and tireless efforts that have been going on for the last two months for this connection work have succeeded in this important phase," the release said.

The BMC came under severe criticism after it emerged that the renovated Gokhale bridge over the railway track at Andheri station was not aligned with the connecting Barfiwala flyover built a decade ago.It has been told in the release that after 14 days of concrete curing work, preparations are being made to start vehicular traffic on both these bridges on July 1.

Barfiwala flyover and Gokhale bridge are important links for Andheri East and West traffic and hence, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani had directed to expedite the work to connect the two.

Hydraulic jacks and 'MS stall packing' were used to raise the Barfiwala flyover by 1,397 mm on one side and 650 mm on the other. At the same time, BMC said that pedestals (supporting pillars) have been used under the Barfiwala flyover.

The release highlighted that matching the 'bolts' provided to the pedestal with the pillars of the Barfiwala flyover was a significant challenge."The challenge of matching these two pedestals very precisely within a gap of only 2 mm was accomplished in a very planned and scientific manner by the technical team of engineers and consultants of the bridge department," the release said.

The work was carried out under the supervision of technical experts from Veermata Jijabai Institute of Technology (VGTI), IIT Bombay and Structonic Consulting Engineers, the consulting firm for the project.

High quality concrete has been used to complete the concreting work quickly.

After this work, 'load test' will be done on the bridge within 24 hours. According to the release, along with this, the work of connecting the bridge is also expected to be completed soon.
