Thrissur (Kerala), A fight broke out at the Congress DCC office here over the defeat of party leader K Muraleedharan from the Central Kerala constituency as a result of BJP's historic victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat.

Police on Saturday registered an FIR against Thrissur District Congress Committee (DCC) president Jose Vallur and 19 other party members on the complaint of DCC secretary Sajeevan Kuriyachira.

The 20 accused have been booked under various bailable sections of the IPC for unlawful assembly, rioting, wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt.

Kuriyachira has alleged in his complaint that Vallur and his supporters beat him up at the DCC office on Friday.

Kuriachira is part of a group close to Muraleedharan that has blamed former MP TN Prathapan and Vallur for the party's defeat in Thrissur.

Muraleedharan's defeat had sparked controversy in the party's district unit as posters were put up outside the Thrissur DCC office on Wednesday, criticizing the district leadership for the "unexpected" defeat.

The dispute turned into a fight at the DCC office on Friday.

BJP's Suresh Gopi had won the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat by a remarkable margin of 74,686, paving the way for the saffron party to open its first account in the state for the lower house of Parliament.

Muraleedharan had to settle for third place with 3,28,124 votes.

Shocked and disappointed, Muralitharan had announced that he would no longer contest elections and would stay away from public life for some time.
