New Delhi [India], Indian chess star D Gukesh, who won the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Candidates title in April, met Union Sports Minister Anura Thakur at his residence on Thursday. In April the 17-year-old Indian created history by winning the FIDE Candidate Chess Tournament 2024, becoming the youngest challenger for the world title held by Ding Liren after a thrilling final round in Toronto. The minister honored Gukesh by giving him a traditional Himachali cap, shawl and memento. Both Gukesh and the minister talked about the game and the tournament experience. The Union Minister wished him all the best for future competitions.In Round 14 of the FIDE Candidates, Gukesh used the black pieces to hold Riva Championship contender Hikaru Nakamura to a draw and ensure his victory. Earlier, speaking to ANI, Gukesh said that his aim now is to shine at the World Championships. "My next goal is to make it big at the World Championships. I just plan to do my best and try to do the right things and be in the ideal condition needed to play good chess.And I hope things will go my way," Gukesh said. Gukesh said he wants to challenge defending champion Ding Liren and his aim has always been to win the crown. "I haven't thought about the preparations yet Is; I didn't get much time. Will start thinking about the match soon. I try to do the best I can and try to give my best.I am eager to start preparing. "I will go there and give my best," he said.
