New Delhi [India], Food Corporation of India (FCI) has procured 266 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat during the current Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2024-25. Last year, FCI procured 262 metric tonnes of wheat during the same season.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on Wednesday stated that over 22 lakh Indian farmers benefited from wheat procurement during MSY 2024-25.

Provisional figures indicate that total wheat procurement during MSY 2024-25 stands at 266 LMT, surpassing the MSY 2023-24 figure of 262 LMT and the 188 LMT recorded during MSY 2022-2023.

Among the major wheat producing states, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have shown significant improvements in their wheat procurement quantities. Uttar Pradesh recorded procurement of 9.31 LMT compared to 2.20 LMT last year, while Rajasthan achieved 12.06 LMT, compared to 4.38 LMT in the previous season.

Normally, the government begins procurement of wheat under the RMS on April 1 every year; However, for the convenience of farmers, it has been postponed for about a fortnight in most of the purchasing states this year, the Ministry said in the statement.

This year's minimum support price (MSP) for wheat was declared at Rs. 2275 per quintal.

The MSP is the minimum price for selected crops grown in the kharif and rabi seasons that the union government considers remunerative to farmers and therefore worthy of support. It acts as a safety net, ensuring farmers receive a fair price.

"The significant quantity of wheat procured has helped the FCI ensure a steady flow of foodgrains to the Public Distribution System (PDS). This entire procurement process has been instrumental in meeting the annual requirement of approximately 184 LMT of wheat in the framework of various welfare plans. including PMGKAY," said the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Apart from wheat, during the Kharif marketing season 2023-24, rice procurement for the core group crossed 775 LMT, benefiting over one crore farmers by disbursing over Rs. 1.74 crore to the bank accounts of these farmers for the purchase of their rice at MSP, according to the ministry.
