Srinagar: Vigorous polling is underway in Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, where over 23 per cent of the 18.36 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 11 am, with Rajouri Assembly constituency recording the highest turnout of 34.93 per cent, officials here said. were recorded.

Officials said Anantnag and Kulgam assembly constituencies are the only two areas where less than 15 percent voting has taken place so far.

Barring an isolated incident in Bijbehara, polling is going on smoothly across the Lok Sabha constituency, which comprises 18 assembly constituencies and is spread over the five districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Poonch and Rajouri, he said.

In the delimitation exercise conducted in Jammu and Kashmir in 2022, Pulwam district and Shopian assembly constituency were removed from the South Kashmir Lok Sabha seat, while seven assembly constituencies of Poonch and Rajouri were added to it.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is contesting from Anantnag-Rajouri Sagar and is pitted against National Conference leader Mian Altaf Ahmed. Apni Party's Zafar Iqbal Manhas is also among the 20 candidates in the fray.

Voting in the constituency began at 7 am and will close at 6 pm.

In the old Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, turnout in 2019 was around nine percent while in 2014 it was around 29 percent.

The voting percentage till 11 am in the 11 assembly constituencies falling in the Kashmir Valley was around 19 percent.

However, in the changing scenario, and with the inclusion of Poonch and Rajour areas in the constituency, the voting percentage is expected to be much higher than the previous election.
