Bundi (Rajasthan): Police on Wednesday detained 17 farmers who were protesting on the highway here demanding release of water in canals for irrigation.

Farmers were protesting under the banner of Sugar Mill Joint Farmers Coordination Committee since Tuesday morning.

Circle Officer of the area, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ashish Bhargava said that at least 17 farmers, who were protesting since Tuesday morning at the Ganesh temple on the Kota-Lalsot Mega Highway, demanding the release of canal water, were detained. Wednesday afternoon.

He told that he was released in the afternoon.

Bhargava said the Kota divisional commissioner has now called a meeting with farmers, public representatives and other stakeholders on July 8 to resolve the canal water issue.

Additional Divisional Commissioner Brijmohan Bairwa said that in the previous meeting, the farmers' delegation was informed that if there is excess water in the dams, water will be released in the canals, which is not available right now due to lack of adequate rains and apart from this, there is shortage of water in the dams of Chambal. There is also water. The river is an interstate issue between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and decisions on it are taken accordingly.

He said that the next meeting on the same issue has now been called on July 8 and by that time a decision will be taken on releasing water in the canals as per the availability of water in the dams.

Meanwhile, Giriraj Gautam, one of the detained farmers, said the police arrested them when they were heading towards Kota Barrage after the second round of unsuccessful talks with the divisional commissioner.

Gautam said that Command Area Development (CAD) officials have now called a meeting of farmers' public representatives and senior officials on July 8 to resolve the issue.

He said that if water is not released in the canals, they will continue their protest outside the Divisional Commissioner's office.
