Patiala/Ambala: Farmers protesting in support of their various demands at Shambhu border in Punjab's Patiala district on Sunday alleged that a group of people tried to create ruckus at the protest site.

However, the accused – who also include businessmen from Ambala – denied the allegation and said they had gone to the protest site to highlight the loss they were facing due to the blocking of the Ambala-Ludhiana National Highway.

The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their Delhi march was stopped by security forces.

The march was led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha to pressure the government to accept their demands such as legal guarantee on minimum support price for crops.

Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher claimed that around 100 people tried to create ruckus and capture the farmers' platform at Shambhu border point.

However, Ambala Wholesale Cloth Merchants Association chief Vishal Batra, among the traders who visited the protest site, rejected the allegation.

He said he had gone there to request farmers to open the highway as it was causing losses to business.

Pandher, on the other hand, said it was the Haryana government, and not the farmers, who had stopped traffic by erecting barricades on the highway to stop them from marching to Delhi.

Pandher also asked Punjab Police to register an FIR in the matter.

Apart from a legal guarantee for minimum support price, farmers are demanding implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, pension for farmers and farm laborers and farm loan waiver, among others.
