The name of his film production company was Gandhimathi and thus he came to be known as Gandhimathi Balan.

Balan stepped into the Malayalam film industry as a producer when he was only twenty, giving hits like 'Sukhmo Devi', 'Panchavadi Palam', 'Thoovanthumbikal' among many others.

His films were directed by Padmarajan, K.G. Like well-known filmmakers did. George, a Joshi, are some of the names.

In total, he produced 33 films and although he moved out of film production in the latter part of his career, he remained the go-to man for many young producers who sought his advice on making their films successful.

A few years ago, Balan started a cyber-forensic startup company along with his daughter.

As soon as the news of Balan's demise spread, condolences started pouring in.

Superstar Mohanlal, who worked in some of the late producer's most successful films, described Balan as his elder brother and said their relationship went beyond work.

“He was not interested in making money through his films, rather he paid special attention to the quality of his films. Not only the film industry, but also his wide circle of friends will miss him. He was a mysterious personality,” said Mohanlal.
