First of all, this time the voters of Ghatal are seeing a contest between two celebrity candidates, namely Deepak Adhikari alias Dev of Trinamool Congress and Hiran Chatterjee of BJP, both actors-turned-politicians.

While Adhikari is a current and two-time TMC Lok Sabha member from Ghatal, the constituency was created ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections after delimitation, Chatterjee is a sitting BJP MLA from Kharagpur (Sadar) assembly constituency in West Midnapore district.

The second interesting thing is that after the failure of seat sharing talks between Left Front and Congress, this time there will be a quadrangular contest in Ghatal. Left Front's allies CPI and Congress have fielded candidates from there.

The ongoing campaign war between the two celebrity candidates in Ghatal Ha has already turned spicy. Hiran Chatterjee, always known to be an outspoken person, has accused his rival Deepak Adhikari of being questioned by E in connection with a money laundering case which is being investigated by the central agency.“The kind of high-profile road shows my opponent is doing is nothing but a projection of his and his party's financial prosperity. Look at us walking on the streets and interacting with common people in person. The present MP comes to Ghatal only once a year and that before the elections. If H is elected this time too, he will disappear again,” Chatterjee said.

Dev, also known as a soft-spoken actor-politician, responded with sarcasm, “God bless my opponent with the product thought process so that he can focus on his campaign instead of focusing on what I am doing. Can concentrate on.Only the voters of Ghatal will say the last word. I would request Hiran to love himself more instead of loving me,” said Dev.

Apart from this, CPI's Tapan Ganguly is also in the fray, who is basically an organization man from the district.

Congress on Sunday announced the name of Dr. Papi Chakraborty as the party candidate from Ghatal at the last moment. An alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur and currently the general secretary of the Congress' social media cell in West Bengal, Chakraborty is a popular young face in the party in the state.

Ghatal was formed after delimitation before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.Of the seven constituencies under it, six are from West Midnapore district, while one is from East Midnapore.

Amidst the strong wave of Trinamool Congress during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in the state, distinguished CPI MP late Gurudas Dasgupta was elected from that constituency by a margin of about 1.5 lakh votes.

However, the equations changed in 2015, as Dev was elected from there. He was re-elected in 2019. This year, he almost decided to step away from electoral politics and focus on this acting career. However, he changed his mind after persuasion by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

With over 16 lakh voters, Ghatal is essentially a Rura area-dominated Lok Sabha constituency. Most of the population is dependent on agriculture.

One of the major problems faced by the people of the constituency almost every year is the devastating floods. Although the issue of master plan for this disaster comes up as an issue before every election, no concrete solution has yet emerged from their side.
