Shimla: Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday said the state government is exploring the possibility of holding Students Central Association (SCA) elections and it is being discussed with Himachal Pradesh University officials.

Addressing media persons after attending the alumni meeting at the university, Sukhu, who is an alumnus of the university, said that SCA elections should be held but since they were stopped due to violent clashes, there is no comment on it. The decision will also be taken only after discussion.

SCA elections in the university were called off in 2014 after violent clashes on the campus between students belonging to ABVP and SFI.

Earlier, the Chief Minister launched the two-day 'Maitri' program at the HPU Alumni Conference and inaugurated the international chapter of 'Maitri'.

Sukhu also recalled his days in university and said that they laid the foundation for his political career.The Chief Minister also said that the state government wants to make Himachal Pradesh economically stable and corruption free.

"The government is working to make Himachal a self-reliant state and several steps are being taken to improve the quality of education in all government institutions," he said.

“When we came to power, the economic condition of the state was in a complete mess due to the huge debt burden inherited from the previous government and we had to take some tough decisions to revive the derailed economy by generating income from the present government. We have set a target to make Himachal Pradesh the most prosperous state by 2032.,

Speaking on the Chief Minister Sukh Ashray Yojana, he said that 4,000 orphan children have been adopted as 'children of the state' and the state government has taken full responsibility for their education.

"A center of excellence will be constructed at Tikri in Kandaghat area of ​​Solan district to provide education to about 300 specially abled persons," he said.

The Chief Minister also announced that Rs 2 crore will be provided to the Alumni Association for the construction of their building.

Sukhu also released three books - 'Juni', 'Main Aur Meri HP University' and 'Yaadein Buransh Ki' by senior journalist Sanjeev Sharma. He also presented free lifetime membership certificates of HPU Alumni Association to four specially abled students.BJP MLA from Una Satpal Singh Satti, recalling his days in the university, said that even though their ideologies were different, CM Sukhu was his good friend and both of them developed their politics in the institute.

“As on date, about 25 student leaders of the university are members of the present Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly,” he said.

Union minister JP Nadda and former Union minister Anand Sharma are also alumni of the university who rose to great heights, Satti said.
